About

The Group of Seven, Canada's adventurous tradition-shattering, mold-breaking artists of the 1910s and onward, explored iconic Canadian scenes and interpreted them in bold colours and applications, mostly 'en plein aire', or outdoors. Outdoor painting has its own set of challenges, including inhospitable weather and the changing position of the sun in the sky altering both quality of light and placement of shadow. Tom Thomson who died in 1917 was a colleague and friend and inspiration to the Group of Seven who formed in 1920 after his death. The members of the Group of Seven are: JEH MacDonald, Lawren S Harris, Franklin Carmichael, AY Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Frederik H Varley, and Frank (Franz) Johnson, who when he left the Group was replaced by AJ Casson.

In the emerging days of their work, this group of artists was widely criticized by the established art community for being too avante gard: outlandish, undisciplined, childish and even clownish in their interpretation. Today, works by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven are beloved around the world and internationally remain one of the most often searched terms on the internet related to Canada. "The elements that inspire are still here."

There are 94 murals listed in the Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery brochure. The self-guided tour is always free. If you would like a paid group guided tour by the mural art director Gerry Lantaigne, please email him in advance to arrange at [email protected].

The Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery brochure is available at the Tourism information office at the Civic Centre, 37 Main Street East, Huntsville.

Many of these murals will form backdrops for activities taking place in Huntsville and area during Culture Days 2019.
