About

Japanese paper — washi — is celebrated among western artists as a substrate for printmaking because its receptive surface provides nuanced results. Plain washi can be dyed or painted to create a palette of coloured and patterned papers for collage, bookbinding, stitching or printing.

A look at images of how washi is made and some of it’s historic and contemporary uses will get your mind going on how you, too, can use it. Some actual artwork by artists using washi will be shown to further inspire. Following the talk, demos on the application of colour (ink, dye, paint) for suminagashi, fold-dyeing and monoprinted patterns, and a brief primer on the use of konnyaku will give you a practical start to tapping the potential of washi for your own work.

This demo is free but pre-registration is required due to limited space.
